Spectazole cream is generally well-tolerated. The most common side effect is irritation of the treated area. This is usually mild and goes away with continued use.

If you experience any severe side effects, stop using Spectazole cream and contact your doctor immediately.

Dosage and Administration

Spectazole cream is applied to the affected area twice daily for two weeks.

For athlete’s foot and jock itch, the cream should be applied to the feet and groin area. For ringworm, the cream should be applied to the body, scalp, or nails.

The cream should be applied sparingly and rubbed in until it is no longer visible. Do not apply to broken or inflamed skin. Avoid contact with the eyes, nose, and mouth.

If you are using Spectazole cream for athlete’s foot, you should also wear clean socks and shoes and keep your feet dry. You may also need to treat your shoes with an antifungal powder or spray.

If you are using Spectazole cream for jock itch, you should also wear clean underwear and keep the groin area dry.

If you are using Spectazole cream for ringworm, you should also avoid sharing towels, bedding, or clothing with others.

If your symptoms do not improve within two weeks of treatment, or if they worsen, contact your doctor.

Interactions

Spectazole cream is not known to interact with other medications. However, it is always best to check with your doctor before starting any new medication, even over-the-counter products.

Mechanism of Action

Spectazole cream works by inhibiting the growth of fungi. The active ingredient, econazole nitrate, belongs to a class of drugs called azoles. Azoles work by blocking the production of ergosterol, a component of fungal cell membranes. This disrupts the cell membranes and inhibits fungal growth.

Econazole nitrate is also available as an oral medication for the treatment of vaginal yeast infections.

Pharmacokinetics

Econazole nitrate is absorbed into the skin and metabolized by the liver. It is excreted in the urine and feces.

Half-Life

The half-life of econazole nitrate is 12 hours.

Spectazole cream should be used for the full course of treatment. Stopping treatment early may increase the risk of recurrence.

Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

Spectazole cream is not known to be harmful to pregnant or breastfeeding women. However, as with all medications, it is always best to check with your doctor before taking any medication during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
