Armour Thyroid (thyroid desiccated) is a natural, porcine-derived thyroid hormone replacement medication. Armour Thyroid is available in tablet form and is taken orally. Armour Thyroid tablets are available in four strengths: 15 mg, 30 mg, 60 mg, and 120 mg. Armour Thyroid may be used to treat hypothyroidism or myxedema coma. Armour Thyroid should not be used to treat obesity or for weight loss.
How does Armour Thyroid work? Armour Thyroid contains natural thyroid hormones T3 and T4. These hormones are normally produced by the thyroid gland. When the thyroid gland is not functioning properly, Armour Thyroid can help replace the missing hormones.
Armour Thyroid includes hair loss, headache, diarrhea, and upset stomach. Armour Thyroid can also cause serious side effects such as chest pain, irregular heartbeat, shortness of breath, and tremor. Armour Thyroid should be used with caution in people with heart disease or a history of heart disease.
Armour Thyroid is available by prescription only. It is not available over-the-counter. Armour Thyroid should be taken as directed by your doctor. Follow the directions on your prescription label carefully. Take Armour Thyroid exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Do not take more or less of it or take it more often than prescribed by your doctor.
The usual starting dose of Armour Thyroid is 60 mg once daily. Your doctor may adjust your dose depending on your response to treatment. Armour Thyroid should be taken with a full glass of water. Armour Thyroid can be taken with or without food.
If you miss a dose of Armour Thyroid, take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once.
