What is Ceftin?
Return to topCeftin is a cephalosporin antibiotic used to treat mild to moderate bacterial infections. Ceftin tablets are used to treat infections of the ear, respiratory tract, sinuses, skin, throat, and urinary tract. Cefin tablets are also used to treat gonorrhea as well as early stage Lyme disease.
Ceftin suspension is used to treat infections of the ear, throat, and skin in children 3 months to 12 years of age.
What is the most important information I should know about Ceftin?
Return to topIf you are allergic to either penicillin or cephalosporin antibiotics, such as cefaclor, cefprozil, or cephalexin, consult your doctor before taking Ceftin. There is a possibility that you are allergic to both types of medication. If a reaction occurs, it could be extremely severe. If you take the Ceftin and develop shortness of breath, a pounding heartbeat, a skin rash, or hives, seek medical attention immediately.
Who should not take Ceftin?

Do not take Ceftin suspension if you are a phenylketonuric. Ceftin suspension contains phenylalanine.

Also, talk to your doctor about your complete medical history, especially if you are taking blood-thinning medications; have a history of inflammation of the large intestine (colitis); kidney disease; or liver disease.
What is the usual dosage?
Return to topThe information below is based on the dosage guidelines your doctor uses. Depending on your condition and medical history, your doctor may prescribe a different regimen. Do not change the dosage or stop taking your medication without your doctor's approval.
Adults and Adolescents ≥13 years of age: The usual dose is 250 milligrams (mg) taken 2 times a day for up to 10 days. For more severe infections, the dose may be increased to 500 mg taken 2 times a day.
Bronchitis
The usual dose is 250 or 500 mg taken 2 times a day for 5-10 days.
Early Lyme Disease
The usual dose is 500 mg taken 2 times a day for 20 days.
Gonorrhea
The usual treatment is a single dose of 1 gram.
Sinus Infection
The usual dose is 250 mg taken 2 times a day for 10 days.
Skin Infection
The usual dose is 250 or 500 mg taken 2 times a day for 10 days.
Throat and Tonsil Infections
The usual dose is 250 mg taken 2 times a day for 10 days.
Urinary Tract Infections
The usual dose is 250 mg taken twice a day for 7-10 days.
Children 3 months to 12 years of age: Ceftin oral suspension may be given. Your doctor will determine the dosage based on your child's weight and the type of infection being treated. Ceftin oral suspension is given twice a day for 10 days. The maximum daily dose range is 500-1000 mg.
For children who are able to swallow tablets whole, the usual dosage for ear infection or sinus infection is 250 mg taken 2 times a day for 10 days.
Be sure to refrigerate the suspension and shake well before using.
How should I take Ceftin?

Ceftin oral suspension must be taken with food. Shake the suspension well before each use.
What should I avoid while taking Ceftin?
Return to topTake Ceftin only when it is prescribed by your doctor, even if you have symptoms that are similar to those of a previous infection. Continued or prolonged use of Ceftin can lead to new infections that do not respond to Ceftin.
What are possible food and drug interactions associated with Ceftin?
Return to topIf Ceftin is taken with certain other drugs, the effects of either could be increased, decreased, or altered. It is especially important to check with your doctor before combining Ceftin with the following: lomotil, probenecid, strong water pills (diuretics) such as furosemide.

Side effects may include: diaper rash in infants, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting
Ceftin has also been reported to occasionally cause allergic reactions, blood disorders, inflammation of the large intestines, kidney and liver problems, yellowing of the skin and eyes, peeling skin, seizures, and severe blisters in the mouth and eyes.
Can I receive Ceftin if I am pregnant or breastfeeding?

What should I do if I miss a dose of Ceftin?
Return to topTake it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the dose you missed and go back to the regular schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once.
How should I store Ceftin?
Return to topStore tablets at room temperature in a tightly closed container, away from moisture.
The oral suspension may be stored in the refrigerator or at room temperature. Discard any unused suspension after 10 days.
