What is Cardene/Cardene SR?

Cardene is used to treat chest pain usually caused by lack of oxygen to the heart resulting from clogged arteries, brought on by exertion. Cardene is also used to treat high blood pressure.

Cardene SR is a long-acting form of the drug and is only used to treat high blood pressure.

What is the most important information I should know about Cardene/Cardene SR?

If you have high blood pressure, you must take Cardene regularly for it to be effective. Since blood pressure declines gradually, it may take several weeks before you get the full benefit of Cardene and you must continue taking it even if you are feeling well. Cardene does not cure high blood pressure it only keeps it under control.

Who should not take Cardene/Cardene SR?

If you have severe narrowing of the aorta resulting in obstruction of blood flow from the heart to the body, you should not take Cardene. Also, if you are sensitive to or have ever had an allergic reaction to Cardene, do not take this drug.

What should I tell my doctor before I take the first dose of Cardene/Cardene SR?

Tell your doctor about all prescription, over-the-counter, and herbal medication you are taking before beginning treatment with Cardene. Also, talk to your doctor about your complete medical history, especially if you have chronic heart failure or liver disease. Be sure to discuss with your doctor how much exercise or exertion is safe for you.

What is the usual dosage?

The information below is based on the dosage guidelines your doctor uses. Depending on your condition and medical history, your doctor may prescribe a different regimen. Do not change the dosage or stop taking your medication without your doctor's approval.

Chest Pain

Adults: The usual starting dose is 20 milligrams (mg), 3 times a day. The usual regular dose is 20-40 mg, taken 3 times a day.

High Blood Pressure

The starting dose is usually 20 mg, 3 times a day. The usual dose ranges from 20-40 mg, taken 3 times a day.

The starting dose of Cardene SR is usually 30 mg, taken 2 times a day. The regular dose ranges from 30-60 mg, taken 2 times a day.

How should I take Cardene/Cardene SR?

Take Cardene exactly as prescribed, even if your symptoms have disappeared.

If you are taking Cardene SR, swallow the capsule whole. Do not chew, crush, or divide it.

Try not to miss any doses. If Cardene is not taken regularly, your condition may worsen.

What should I avoid while taking Cardene/Cardene SR?

Avoid driving or engaging in hazardous activities. Cardene can cause your blood pressure to become too low, making you feel lightheaded or faint.

What are possible food and drug interactions associated with Cardene/Cardene SR?

If Cardene is taken with certain other drugs, the effects of either could be increased, decreased, or altered. It is especially important to check with your doctor before combining Cardene with the following: amiodarone, cimetidine, cyclosporine, digoxin, phenytoin, and propranolol.

What are the possible side effects of Cardene/Cardene SR?

Side effects cannot be anticipated. If any develop or change in intensity, tell your doctor as soon as possible. Only your doctor can determine if it is safe for you to continue taking this drug.

Side effects may include: dizziness, flushing, headache, increased chest pain (angina), indigestion, nausea, pounding or rapid heartbeat, sleepiness, swelling of feet, weakness

Can I receive Cardene/Cardene SR if I am pregnant or breastfeeding?

The effects of Cardene during pregnancy and breastfeeding are unknown. Tell your doctor immediately if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or you are breastfeeding.

What should I do if I miss a dose of Cardene/Cardene SR?

Take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the one you missed and go back to your regular schedule. Do not take 2 doses at the same time.

How should I store Cardene/Cardene SR?

Store at room temperature, away from light and moisture.
