Return to topAdderall XR is a once-daily central nervous system stimulant medicine used for the treatment of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Adderall XR may help increase attention and decrease impulsiveness and hyperactivity in patients with ADHD.
What is the most important information I should know about Adderall XR?
Return to topThe following have been reported with the use of Adderall XR and other stimulant medications: heart-related problems such as sudden death in patients who have heart problems or heart defects; stroke and heart attack in adults; and increased blood pressure and heart rate. Call the doctor right away if you experience any signs of heart problems such as chest pain, shortness of breath, or fainting while taking Adderall XR.
Other serious side effects that have been reported include mental problems such as new or worsening behavior and thought problems; new or worsening bipolar disorder; and new or worsening aggressive behavior or hostility. It is especially important to monitor children and teenagers for any new psychotic or manic symptoms.
Who should not take Adderall XR?
Return to topAdderall XR should not be taken if you have heart disease or hardening of the arteries; have moderate to severe high blood pressure; have an overactive thyroid; have an eye disease called glaucoma; are very anxious, tense, or agitated; have a history of drug abuse; are taking or have taken within the past 14 days a type of medication called a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI); or if you are sensitive to, allergic to, or had a reaction to other stimulant medicines.
Adderall XR is not recommended for use in children under 3 years old.
What should I tell my doctor before I take the first dose of Adderall XR?
Return to topTell your doctor about all prescription, over-the-counter, and herbal medications you are taking before beginning treatment with Adderall XR. Also, talk to your doctor about your complete medical history, including heart problems, heart defects, high blood pressure, or a family history of these problems; a history of mental problems or a family history of suicide, bipolar disorder, or depression; tics or Tourette's syndrome; liver or kidney problems; thyroid problems; and seizures or an abnormal brain wave test (EEG).
Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding.
What is the usual dosage?
Return to topThe information below is based on the dosage guidelines your doctor uses. Depending on your condition and medical history, your doctor may prescribe a different regimen. Do not change the dosage or stop taking your medication without your doctor's approval.
Adults: In adults who are either starting treatment for the first time or switching from another medication, the recommended dose is 20 milligrams (mg) a day. Patients taking divided doses of immediate-release Adderall may be switched to Adderall XR at the same total daily dose taken once a day.
Adolescents: The recommended starting dose for adolescents 13 to 17 years old is 10 mg/day. The dose may be increased to 20 mg/day after 1 week if symptoms are not adequately controlled.
Children: Children 6 years and older who are either starting treatment for the first time or switching from another medication should start with 10 milligrams (mg) once daily in the morning; daily dosage may be adjusted in increments of 5 mg or 10 mg at weekly intervals. The maximum recommended dose for children is 30 mg/day.
How should I take Adderall XR?
Return to topTake Adderall XR once a day in the morning when you first wake up. Adderall XR is an extended-release capsule that releases medicine into your body throughout the day. Swallow Adderall XR capsules whole with water or other liquids. If you or your child cannot swallow the capsule, open it and sprinkle the medicine over a spoonful of applesauce. Swallow the applesauce and medicine mixture without chewing. Follow with a drink of water or other liquid. Adderall XR may be taken with or without food.

What are possible food and drug interactions associated with Adderall XR?

It is especially important to check with your doctor before combining Adderall XR with the following: antidepressant medications (including MAOIs), antipsychotic medications, blood pressure medications, blood thinners, cold or allergy medicines that contain decongestants, lithium, narcotic pain medications, seizure medications, and stomach acid medications.

Can I receive Adderall XR if I am pregnant or breastfeeding?

Mothers taking amphetamines such as Adderall XR should refrain from nursing. Tell your doctor immediately if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breastfeeding.
What should I do if I miss a dose of Adderall XR?
Return to topTake it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and return to your regular schedule. Never take 2 doses at the same time.
